About the Health Center
Loyola University Chicago’s Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing has operated a School-Based Health Center (SBHC) within Proviso East High School (PEHS) for 22 years. The SBHC’s mission is to enhance students’ academic performance and healthy lifestyle choices by providing medical, mental health, and preventive health care services. We provide full-service primary care without charging for services. We are funded by grants, private foundations, and philanthropy. The SBHC is monitored, inspected, and certified annually by the Illinois Department of Public Health, and it meets all quality standards for nurse-managed centers.
The SBHC is a potent training ground for nurses, physicians, social workers, public health workers, and other Loyola students in the provision of trauma-informed care. We also train the clinicians how to address structural racism, discrimination, and bias with cultural humility. We provide full service primary care without charging for services. We have developed a robust referral system with our community health service partners within the catchment area.
Your gift at work:
Funding will be used to purchase items for our “Pirate Pantry.” The pantry is stocked with items that positively impact our adolescents’ ability to attend school, and they are gifted at no cost. Pirate Pantry inventory includes non-perishable healthy snacks, toiletries, feminine hygiene supplies, socks, changes of clothes, hats, mittens, notebooks, pens, first aid kits, and more.
Why is your support necessary?
Our project goals will support the physical and mental well-being of the Proviso High School Township District 209 Schools to aid health behavior recovery efforts since Covid. Specifically, we are seeking funds to mitigate the impact of the social determinants of health on the students of Proviso Township.
